Transport came in the form of a dinghy. Liam and I stood at the dock at the Battery and stared at the small vessel built for two medium-sized occupants, or one very large one.

“Are you sure he doesn’t have a death wish for us?” Liam asked. “This barely qualifies as a boat. How are we supposed to survive a sea monster attack?”

“I think the size is for our benefit. It’s too small to be noticeable by any threats.”

“Speaking of too small to be noticeable, where’s George?”

“I didn’t tell him where I was going.”

“Why not? This seems like the perfect situation for a phoenix friend.”

“I didn’t want to endanger him.”

“Oh, sure. Let George stay safe and sound but walk old Liam straight into the lion’s den.”

“George will follow me anywhere. It isn’t fair to take advantage of that.”

Liam gave me a critical look as he tossed his backpack into the boat. “You owe me for this.”

I climbed into the dinghy and patted the space in front of me. “All aboard.”

Reluctantly Liam boarded the small vessel. “Where’s the motor?”

I lifted an oar from the bottom of the dinghy and handed it to him. “Here you go.”

“And the hits keep on coming.”

“Oh, please. You’re strong.”

He pointed to the choppy water. “See those waves? Makes it harder to row.”

“A motor would be more likely to summon a sea monster. The oars are safer.”

“And slower.” He surveyed the bottom. “Where’s the other one?”

I located the other one next to my foot. “Do you want to take the first shift or shall I?”

“I’ll do it,” he grumbled.

Based on current conditions, I estimated it would take us two to three hours to reach the island. Liam could row for ninety minutes and then I’d take over until we arrived.

We set off into the darkness. Once upon a time, ferries came in and out of the harbor filled with visitors to Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Those days were long over.

“This is the short end of the stick,” Liam complained half an hour later. “Why didn’t the king just send a butterfly patrol?”

“Because I told him not to.”

He grunted. “I like how the king takes orders from you now.”

“We’re going for more than monsters. I’m hoping we get answers, too.”

He nudged the backpack with his foot. “I came prepared for monsters.”

“Me, too.” Knowing the creatures might be bloodless, I packed an array of weapons, although not so many that we’d sink the boat. It was a delicate balance.

“You know, Britt, for someone leaving town, you sure are around a lot.”

“This is more important.”

“Why? Because the king deems it so.” He blew out a breath as he continued to row.

“There’s a looming threat, Liam. What kind of person would I be if I up and left?”

His gaze met mine. “A survivor.”

“More like a selfish coward.”

Liam groaned. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“No, I really would be a selfish coward.”

“Not that.” He pointed behind me. “That.”

I turned to peer at the surface of the black water where two small ears on a large head emerged from the depths.
